I cannot speak for the '30s through '70s because I've never personally witnessed those decades but I was a witness to the glory of Philippine cinema during the '80s.
I was a young kid in the '80s. I cannot speak for the 1930s to 1970s films because I have never personally witnessed those cinematic decades but I witnessed the glorious years of Philippine cinema in the 1980s.
The '80s was an era when there were warring fans clubs and the theaters were jam-packed with people. If you have the guts to brave an FPJ-starrer, then you'd have to be in a standing room only and risk not sitting throughout the film. If you wanted to watch the film comfortably, then you'd have to watch it a second time so you can already grab a seat. Again, there was no guarantee that you'd be comfy even when you're already seated.
Everyone's simply noisy because they were rooting for their protagonist. You can hear people clapping to support the lead actor while you can hear boos when the villain pins him to the ground.
I saw my first movie when I was a very, very small kid. My aunt and uncle (if I remember this correctly) took me with them to watch Fernando Poe Jr. and Julie Vega's Isang Bala Ka Lang. It was 1983.
FPJ and the Regal Babies weren't the only ones who sold tickets in the box office. Nora Aunor, Vilma Santos, Sharon Cuneta, Maricel Soriano, Dina Bonnevie, Snooky Serna, and many others were stars that filled movie houses as well. The best movie directors such as Lino Brocka, Ishmael Bernal, Mario O' Hara, Celso Ad Castillo, and many more produced the most provocative yet timely films.
Here are some of the movies that graced the screen during that decade --
