This week had been a tragic one for our family. Our beloved chocolate Labrador - Marley - passed away yesterday. We are devastated; to quote my Facebook post, Marley took a piece of my heart when he went to dog heaven. Any fur parent would understand the loneliness that follows the death of a beloved furry family member.
Our family still strongly advocates pet ownership, though. The kids learn to be more responsible as they take care of a smaller being. The pets, in turn, shower the family with all the love that they are able to give.
Here in the Philippines, PAWS or the Philippine Animal Welfare Society not only shelters animals but offers a chance for Pinoys to become fur parents. So if you've never been one, how about giving it a serious thought this time?
But, of course, there is a process.
The adoption process is far from easy. My younger sister went through the whole process to adopt two kittens. As per PAWS' website, it takes about two weeks to a month to adopt a pet and this is after having been interviewed 2-3 times for compatibility.
PAWS assures the would-be fur parents that the dog or cat they adopt is already vaccinated, dewormed, and neutered/spayed, some have even undergone obedience training.

For those who have not had a pet before, I assure you, the love that you would get is worth all the time you give and effort that you exert.
Still on animalandia, three days ago, it was announced that the Manila Zoo had been closed. Personally, this is a welcome thing because it has become a Manila Bay pollutant - a major one at that. On January 21, Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada issued the memorandum to temporarily close the zoo citing sewerage treatment and the installation of facilities for water treatment as the reasons behind the closure.
It's high time that the city government did this. The place had been the death cage of Bertha, the world's oldest hippopotamus and it's been ridiculed for not treating the animals properly. When I watched the late night news a day before the zoo's closure, I saw an Indian national being interviewed. He said that the place was dirty and that it pales in comparison to the other zoos that he had visited in our neighboring Asian countries.
I felt hurt by that interview but, as the saying goes, the truth hurts. This closure is a chance for Pinoys to make it right, not just for our image but more so, for the sake of the poor animals that are kept there.
