No one would wake up at 4 A.M. to hack coconut leaves yet Anna and Liza do just this for as long as they could remember. It’s a cycle – leaves are hacked then the leaflets cut and eventually arranged on a pile, the stalks are ultimately shaved and placed aside to dry – it’s an honorable trade but not one that would be elaborated on a This-Is-My-Dream-Career essay.
Breakfast is served; two pieces of tuyo and a tiny pot of rice for a family of four. What’s next is an hour-long journey from Barangay Baas to Hilongos, all the way from their mountainous residence to the city below.
Who knows how many more hours they’re going to endure under the scorching heat of the morning sun? Four brooms each, they trudge on.
The heavens have blessed them today as a couple riding a motorcycle circled back to ask what they’re peddling.
‘We will be fed…we will be.’
*This is loosely based on a true story as there are people from Baas (a barangay in Eastern Leyte) who really sell coconut brooms. The hubby and I were able to speak to two of them (hence the story) and with each broom costing only 25 pesos, they need to sell all eight so they can buy enough food for their family for that day.

The Victorian-style painting, Portait of a Lady, by Juan Luna is a visual marvel. You may have just passed by it in one of your National Museum for Fine Arts tours, but a dark, mysterious story lies behind its charming appeal.
Gusto mo bang malaman ang lovelife ni Balagtas?

This week had been a tragic one for our family. Our beloved chocolate Labrador - Marley - passed away yesterday. We are devastated; to quote my Facebook post, Marley took a piece of my heart when he went to dog heaven. Any fur parent would understand the loneliness that follows the death of a beloved furry family member.
Our family still strongly advocates pet ownership, though. The kids learn to be more responsible as they take care of a smaller being. The pets, in turn, shower the family with all the love that they are able to give.
Here in the Philippines, PAWS or the Philippine Animal Welfare Society not only shelters animals but offers a chance for Pinoys to become fur parents. So if you've never been one, how about giving it a serious thought this time?
But, of course, there is a process.
Nine out of ten people like chocolate. The tenth person always lies.
I've got a story to tell. Our recent move to Eastern Visayas was a concession. I did not approve of it, at first, because my home had always been Luzon. I grew up in Muntinlupa City and I moved to Cavite and eventually Laguna during my married years. I knew that it was going to be a huge adjustment for the entire family to move to a totally different place. Although Leyte was my hubby's home province, the kids and I treat it as a vacation spot - never as a permanent home.
So what gives?
Filipinos are known for their unique courtship customs. You have probably heard of pamamanhikan (asking for a girl's hand in marriage), harana (serenading), and even the more physical aspects of winning a woman's family's favor by chopping firewood and pag-iigib (fetching water).
But how would these play out in our contemporary world? This is what Ang Kapilya Sa Dalampasigan (currently #40 in Wattpad under the Filipino category) is all about. It's not too traditional but not flagrant either.
So what is this Wattpad story all about?
Were you able to get a free calendar before the year ended? While most companies do provide calendars as a giveaway on the last month of each year, there are only a few that go beyond prominently displaying their company logos. Let's give recognition where recognition is due.
For a year or two now, Petron's been holding arts competition for works that they could feature in their yearly calendar. And I looooove the works that they featured this year. Before we take a peek, I would also like to commend Rebisco for coming up with a cultural concept for their cans of biscuits.
Let's take a peek --
You probably already researched about the life of Ms. Catriona Gray, after all, she's no less than the queen of the moment. Miss Philippines is Miss Universe 2018 and we're all very proud of her. What I'd want to share here was our reaction - there was a whole bunch of us, all strangers to each other - that watched and reacted as Catriona's name was being announced.
'Wanna guess where we were?
Now that we're in the province, this cottage by the seashore serves as their daily classroom. We get free 'air-conditioning' care of the sea breeze, free natural light, and an ambiance that's like no other. And when they need to take a break, they just go to the waters, schoon a few pebbles, and cool their feet with the onrushing waves.
One of the biggest reasons why we switched to homeschooling from traditional schooling is to be more hands-on teachers to our kids. This is just one of the plethora of reasons why you should consider switching, too. Here are some more that you should seriously think about --
